KATHERINE NORTH CARROLL
President & Principal Designer
Born and raised in Ireland, I have also lived in Switzerland, New Mexico, Illinois and San Francisco. I founded Northbrook Design in 1999 after spending the early part of my career in hotel design. I’m proud to be a guest critic for the interior design programs at both UC Berkeley and the San Francisco Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM).
Helping clients define how they want their home to feel is one of my favorite parts of being a designer. It’s not just about how their home looks – it’s about what it’s like to live there. My process starts when I first meet a client and learn their story. I listen carefully and study their living and work spaces for visual cues. Then I start thinking of ideas. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to use my imagination every day in such a productive way.
My years of experience have given me the skills and expertise I require to anticipate the needs of both the client and the project, while simultaneously maintaining a big-picture view of the design direction. I strongly believe that every project is better if the client provides input and feedback. I love collaborating with architects, landscape architects, general contractors and art advisors to deliver the best possible result for the client.
In addition to my work and my family, I enjoy letterpress printing, running, spending time at Kelly Miller Circus, and traveling to new places.
Design Services Lead
I earned a BFA in Interior Design from the Ringling College of Art + Design in Florida. While there, I was awarded the Angelo Donghia Foundation scholarship. California called in 2006, so I moved to San Francisco. With more than a decade of experience working at high-end residential design firms in San Francisco and New York as both a designer and a project manager, I now focus on design services. This allows me to oversee the design process from conception to installation on each of our projects.
The most rewarding part of my career as an interior designer is creating a sense of order. Whether I’m reviewing a set of plans for new construction or walking through a house that needs updating, the possibilities intrigue me. I have a unique ability to see both the big picture and the details, and envision how they will come together. It stems from growing up in a military family that moved around a lot – I was always imagining the potential of our next house.
When designing a floor plan or selecting furnishings, many clients are understandably overwhelmed. I really enjoy the process of filtering all the options and tailoring a presentation to the client, because only they can select the best solution for their lifestyle.
Outside of work, I enjoy the beach, painting landscapes and eating good food with my husband/favorite baker.
Jackhammers, tool belts and survey instruments were the tools of my trade for the first 15 years of my construction career. I owned a contracting firm for several years before I discovered how useful a computer could be as a tool to streamline construction processes. I have worked in estimating, accounting, project management and field operations, all of which I was able to make more efficient with my on-the-job technology training.
I’ve always been drawn to computers and software. I’m most passionate about staying current on new technology, which makes being creative even easier for our design team. Developing and improving the methodology that enhances the day-to-day operation of our business is very rewarding for me. It allows us to provide accurate and timely information to our clients and fosters an environment of trust that is the foundation of our local working relationships as well as those in New York.
I also love the camaraderie, workspace and team-player environment at Northbrook Design. I really dig learning more about interior design every day and consider myself lucky to have such great colleagues.
When I’m not at work, I love hanging out with my family, hiking, hitting the gym, gardening and fishing.
